Frequently asked questions
What is a good speed-to-lead time for contractors?
Under 5 minutes. SpeedToLead Board grades a reply within 5 minutes as an A. In Valve+Meter's test of 466 home-service companies, 95% did not respond within 5 minutes, so replying that fast puts a contractor ahead of nearly all competitors.
How many contractors never respond to leads?
About 40%. Valve+Meter submitted inquiries to 466 home-service companies and 40% never responded at all (source: marketing.valveandmeter.com/speed-to-lead-home-services).
How does the SpeedToLead Board test work?
A contractor signs up, receives a unique test code, submits a test lead to their own website form or inbox, and starts a timer. When their team replies, they stop the timer and receive a grade from A to F.
How are grades calculated?
A = within 5 minutes, B = within 15 minutes, C = within 1 hour, D = within 24 hours, F = longer than 24 hours or no reply.
Do you test companies that didn't sign up?
No. SpeedToLead Board is opt-in only. It never robocalls, records calls, or submits fake form fills to any company. Only companies that test themselves and choose to be public appear on the leaderboard.
Are the results verified?
Results are self-reported: the contractor starts and stops the timer. Rows labeled "Example data" are placeholders, not real companies.
How can I improve my speed-to-lead?
Route every web lead to a phone alert, send an instant automated text acknowledgement, and assign a named person to call back within 5 minutes. Builder Clarity (builderclarity.com) sets this up for construction companies.
About and methodology
*In the Valve+Meter speed-to-lead study, researchers submitted inquiries to 466 home-service companies. 95% didn't respond within 5 minutes and 40% never responded at all. Leads go cold fast, and the first company to reply usually wins the job.
How we measure: SpeedToLead Board is a self-reported, opt-in test. The timer starts when you click "I sent the test lead" and stops when you click "We replied". Results are only as honest as the person taking the test, so we label them as self-tested. Example rows are clearly marked Example data and are not real companies.
What we never do: no robocalls, no call recording, no fake form fills, and no listing of companies that didn't sign up.
SpeedToLead Board is built by Builder Clarity, which helps construction companies with AI, operations, automation and GoHighLevel.
